In 2023, the border strip next to Gartside Gardens served as a test site to establish a wildflower meadow.

Various attempts had been made with all varieties ultimately failing.

To mitigate this, Ardwick Climate Action trialled three different seed mixes. The most successful quickly became obvious.

In 2024, the prevailing mix will be extended throughout the rest of the strip.

There are many reasons why plant life can struggle in urban environments. In Manchester, some of these reasons for failure can be more acute due to waste that still affects soil quality, mainly a legacy from the Industrial Revolution.

The most successful planting was a dual-purpose mix (annual/perennial combination).
