Plants and Wildlife

The 465th Scouts represents the closest group to the city centre. Until the development of the site, the Cubs, Beavers and Scouts were without a green space, usually synonymous with these organisations.

Utilising the disused green space at Craigwell Walk, an allotment has been established alongside a mini-orchard that borders the road. In the centre, you will find a campfire space, regularly used to toast a marshmallow or two!

Wild Flower Bed (Various Species)

Wildflower patches are important to urban environments due to the quantity of flowers they produce. On a single day in summer, 1 acre of a wildflower meadow can house up to 3 million flowers. In this more modest planter, over 300 flowers can be expected in summer, supporting Manchester's pollinators.

Raspberry Bed

A native species to the UK, raspberries have long been cultivated in food production. They are useful to gardens as they help prevent soil erosion and boost biodiversity.

When flowering, they are a rich resource for pollinators.

Blackberry Bed

Particularly important to hive bees, Blackberrys are a favourite of Bumblebees and Honeybees.

A UK native, they are a hardy plant that will thrive in most urban environments.

Strawberry Bed

Strawberries help to foster vibrant pollinator activity with its nectar-rich flowers.

They also create micro-habitats with their ground cover, providing shelter for small insects.

Mixed Lettuce Bed

Lettuce is a foundation plant for British food chains.

Used by insects and larvae, which in turn are hunted by birds and mammals, lettuce also serves herbivores such as rabbits.

Potato Bed

Potatoes are an incredibly sustainable food source.

They produce more food energy per cubic meter of water used than any other major crop and use less land per kilogram of production than most other foods.

Herb Bed

Adding a variety of herbs to urban spaces will have a positive chain reaction on local ecology.

They are a rich resource for pollinators. In turn, they attract various species of birds.

Onion & Garlic Bed

Onions and garlic have a long harvest period running from summer to autumn. For any grower in the city, they act to repel pests while attracting pollinators.

Onion and garlic also work to improve soil quality by adding nutrients to their surrounding area.

Rhubarb Bed

The first mention of the British Titan, Rhubarb Pie, was a recipe by Maria Rundell in A New System of Domestic Cookery in 1807.

It was first cultivated in the UK in the 1600s for medicinal purposes, becoming a food source in the 1700s.

Bean Bed

High in protein, packed with complex carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, beans are important to maintain a healthy diet.

With thick foliage, they are an important shelter for insects during the summer months.

Carrot Bed

Now considered a superfood by many experts, carrots are a great food for supporting our health.
Carrots can work to balance your blood sugar, help with weight management, lower your risk of cancer, regulate blood pressure, reduce heart disease, improve immunity, and boost brain health.

Radish Bed

Another superfood, Radishes are rich in antioxidants.

They are a great companion plant when growing food in urban environments with high levels of air pollution as they filter water.
